The ransomware attack forced to shut down the entire Las Cruces school servers and computers to contain the infection. The officials spotted the infection on Tuesday at 7 a.m.
The district set up an incident response team to maintain communication between the school and other districts through phone and handheld radios.
Ransomware attack often happens through phishing emails that contain malicious attachments or links to download malicious files.
Once ransomware gets executed in the target machine, it encrypts all the files present in the system and asks victims to pay a ransom in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoins, Monera, etc.
The ransomware attack results in loss of sensitive information and it affects the regular operation. Ransomware remain’s in the list of top threats for years, it turns as a trunky business for Cybercriminals.
Recent research reveals that the ransomware groups tied up with network intruder groups to launch high profile attacks.
The ransomware attacks become very common nowadays, it targets any company or user regardless of the organization or the business type.
In this case, the infection was contained as the district school shut down the servers to prevent the infection.
“At that moment we started shutting down all other servers to prevent further spread, and shut down all devices across the district,” said Matthew Dawkins, to KFOX14.
Dawkins also mentioned that the school remains open, while the IT team working to restore the systems. Also, the district school confirms that no staff or student data has been breached.
